The Way We Live Now - Daily Life in the 21st Century - James Holden, Research Manager, BBC News and Graeme Griffiths, Associate Director, TNS

The BBC has conducted a survey into daily life in this Country since the 1930s. It currently involves 6,000 respondents and 15,000 respondent days. In essence, the survey asks people to record where they were and what they were doing throughout the day, both primary and secondary activities.

Highlights include:

  • At 5.30 in the morning, 8% of people are up.
  • By 7.30, 1 in 7 are at work.
  • By 9.00, 90% are awake.

Activities recorded include D-I-Y and gardening which are popular during the day, watching videos, texting etc. Television viewing takes over from radio at 16.00 as being the more popular medium but fades away significantly after 22.00. In 1950, we watched 15 hours of television a week and 18 hours in 1974. In 2003, the number of hours had fallen back to 15.
